Prof. Olurotimi John Badero is a globally renowned physician recognized as the world’s first and only Board-Certified Interventional Cardio-Nephrologist, combining expertise in both heart and kidney care. His pioneering contributions to medicine have earned him numerous international honors, including a prestigious Award from the United States Congress for his distinguished medical career and humanitarian service. He is also recognized as the first Professor of Cardiology & Nephrology in Nigeria and Across Africa.
Professor Badero’s academic excellence became evident early in life, as he skipped several grades in primary school because of his outstanding performance. In secondary school, he emerged as the overall best student in Nigeria at a National Science Quiz Competition. He subsequently obtained his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and later continued his postgraduate medical training in the United States.
In the U.S, he completed a three-year residency training in Internal Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, New York, followed by a two-year fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He later returned to SUNY Downstate for a three-year fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine.
Professor Badero pursued further fellowship training in Invasive and Interventional Cardiology, as well as Peripheral and Endovascular Intervention, at the prestigious Yale University School of Medicine, where he graduated with distinction and received an award for outstanding performance. He further completed additional fellowship training in Interventional Nephrology, Endovascular Medicine, and Dialysis Access Intervention. In total, he completed an unprecedented 10 consecutive years of postgraduate medical training, with specialization across seven distinct fields of medicine, earning six specialty board certifications — a rare accomplishment that distinguishes him among physicians worldwide.

Since 2015, he has actively contributed to reversing brain drain in Nigeria through lectures and medical training initiatives at Obafemi Awolowo University as well as University of Lagos.
His numerous honors include the Obafemi Awolowo University Global Award for Excellence in Medicine, the Distinguished OAU Alumni Award for Professional Excellence, the ANNL Presidential Award, the Most Purposeful Healthcare Person in Nigeria Award presented by Olusegun Obasanjo, and Mississippi Health Care Hero Award.
In 2023, Professor Badero expanded his impact in Nigeria through Iwosan Lagoon Hospital, where he serves as Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. There, he pioneered several landmark procedures, including Nigeria’s first selective renal angiogram and the first endovascular limb salvage revascularization procedure for critical limb ischemia and occluded arteries in patients with peripheral artery disease.
His groundbreaking work has also led to the discovery and publication of several first-ever interventional cardiology cases in Nigeria. Including the First Coronary Cameral Fistula Case in Nigeria as well as the first Angiographically Documented Anomalous Coronary Artery Case in Nigeria amongst others.
Professor Badero is currently a Visiting Professor of Medicine at University of Lagos and serves as CEO of Cardiac Renal & Vascular Associates in Jackson Mississippi U.S.A
